Teatime sketching no.1 – 2023-08-06

I’ve done teatime sketching before and I’ve posted the results on Instagram. Decided that I wanted to post this on my blog too just because this is where I enjoy creating and sharing things. So, enjoy! Here are some snapshots of people at Millenia Walk’s Koufu on a Sunday afternoon. I was chatting with my brother while sipping on a huge cup of iced milk tea. How lovely.

I drew everything on the spot in a black pen in my trusty sketchbook. I then scanned the pages with the Camscanner app and coloured some of them in using Krita. It’s my first time using the “multiply” function and the watercolour brush in Krita. I really enjoyed the experience!

People were a lot closer in the koufu so I tried to capture facial expressions and features.

I attempted to add a “toned” background before colouring this portrait. I’m either not doing it right, or I just don’t like the style.

These were a couple of quick profiles. The auntie on the top right eating a pineapple was actually pretty far away, so I filled in her expression with my imagination. The top left had the strongest side profile, though I definitely didn’t capture her gentle features that well. I like the volume/shape of the head in the bottom left.

While drawing the design on the back of the chair, I got confused about whether I was drawing the chair or the negative space.

This was my favourite piece. It was the first one I attempted to colour and I think their skin tones turned out the best. I think I also like that the characters were actually sitting next to each other so they don’t exist as floating heads but instead exist in relation to each other, and the table in front of them.

I just started on the drawing of the uncle in the chair when he started to check his watch and shifting around. Not one to panic, I quickly tried to capture the basic structure first. Thankfully he still had some time and was just on his phone for a while. Phew!

I remember wondering when this striking haircut in this specific copper/red colour had come back into style. I unfortunately still associate it with a meme about a common white female name.

I tried to portray the difference in the cut on the top of his head vs his side. The cut was more severe on the side and fuller on the top, I think it’s called a fade? I’m not sure. Also almost forgot to capture his religious bracelets. The interesting thing I remember about this scene is how he was drinking two cans of Ayataka green tea by himself.

Thanks for joining me in this edition of teatime sketches. See you next time! 💜
