Food review
I came across Tamago-en for the first time many years ago when it first opened in 313 Somerset. That outlet is closed now and they currently only have two outlets in Singapore. One is in NEX and one is in Changi City Point. As a Westie, it’s just not a place that I would come across on a regular basis.
So don’t ask me why but there I was on a weekday afternoon at Changi City Point, looking around for something to eat. It took us a while to decide but we eventually settled on Tamago-en. There was a really enticing poster showing their weekday lunch set outside. Almost all of us ordered the same thing and we all agreed it was good but so filling.

Every lunch set comes with:

- Pickle and mustard side
- Drink of your choice (limited selection)
- Dessert

The first thing that struck me about the set was the whole presentation. I love how it looks when it arrives. I also love the colour of the egg and it was cooked but still silky and slightly runny. My first bite was so good. The savoury-sweet bonito sauce coated every piece of chicken and crevice of egg. Together with the warm fluffy rice, I was in heaven. I’m quite particular about chicken cooked in this way but I’m happy to report that the chicken is cooked exactly how I like it. The egg tasted as good as it looked.
In terms of the portion size, I was a relieved when I realised the bowl was more shallow than it looked on the outside. Still, there was just so much chicken that many of us couldn’t finish. I resorted to finishing the chicken and leaving some of that beautiful fluffy rice behind. I think it was good but I could have done with just two-thirds or even just half of the portion of chicken. I think big meat eaters would appreciate this though.
Miso soup and pickles
The miso soup was lovely. The pickles were refreshing but I’m not sure how I was supposed to eat the little lick of mustard. 😲
Dessert: Cheesecake slice
It was smaller than expected, which in this case was fine because I was so full after the main meal already. It tasted like cheesecake but in terms of the texture, it was closer to a whipped cream than a dense cheese cake. It was the perfect way to round off the meal.
Final thoughts
This is a really value-for-money meal for the amount of food that is provided. I love that the meal felt very balanced. It’s situated near Changi Business Park and the weekday set lunch is perfect for people working there. I noticed a lot of office workers having the lunch set so it seems quite popular.
I would recommend this if you’re celebrating a special occasion or feeling a little bougie. Be careful about trying this on a day where you need to be awake in the afternoon though! This meal is super heavy, at least for me, I was fighting a food coma for the next 3 hours. ⚔️
