Review

A lot of restaurants were booked out on Mothers’ Day weekend (naturally). My mum told us about this restaurant that was on the National University of Singapore (NUS) campus. The restaurant does western-local fusion and specialises in grilled meats.

The day we went, bookings were full and most of the tables were families of 4 pax and up. I think sharing with a few people is the best way to enjoy this restaurant so that you can try a variety of dishes.

Rojak Chicken Wings ($9)

This rojak chicken sounded quite interesting. The sauce does have the rojak taste, but it was just ok to me, I wouldn’t rush to order it again.

Roasted Ebi Potato Salad ($10)

I thought this was pretty good. It had a good flavour and texture. The highlight would be the ebi bits which added a bit of crunch.

Smoked Cauliflower with Roasted Corn Sauce ($18)

This restaurant specialised in a grilled beef short rib from their smoker. Unfortunately we couldn’t eat beef, we went for a cauliflower instead. I quite liked it! I love grilled vegetables in general so it’s hard to see what could go wrong here. I liked the char from the grill and the sauce was tasty. Laksa leaves are a bonus. Would order again, I could have eaten the whole thing by myself.

Chicken Thigh with Tamarind Hot sauce ($19)

This was my favourite meat. The portion was large so I felt it was worth it. The chicken is all boneless (yay!) and the char was satisfying. The chicken meat was tender, and I liked the sauce.

Thai Style Pork with Cucumber Salsa ($26)

This was a family favourite! Super tasty and smoky from the grill. Thick enough slices to get a nice bite and flavour, but not too thick that it takes too long to chew. The meat was tender and slightly sweet. Like a moo ping, but with a pork cutlet instead of minced meat. The meat goes well with the salsa, but it doesn’t really need it.

BBQ Claypot Laksa Rice with Seafood ($28)

Sadly this was the miss of the night. I thought this was just ok. A bit on the dry side. I’m not sure if I could taste the laksa flavour unless I added the sauce on the side. The prawn head also felt a bit undercooked or off, but I’m not too sure. Personally wouldn’t order this again, just because there are better things to order on the menu.

Pandan Mousse, Coconut Rum and Gula Melaka Sago ($8)

Nice flavour combination. This was a light dessert with familiar local flavours that was not too sweet. I would order this again.

Pulut Hitam Cake with Jackfruit and Coconut Dip ($8)

I liked the taste of the cake. I didn’t know there was jackfruit in the dip, I assumed it was just coconut. I would also order this again.

Final thoughts

Definitely an interesting place, albeit slightly inaccessible. We had mostly hits with some misses, but I think it’s overall worth the visit. I would order the meats again, and if I was feeling bougie I would order their beef short ribs, since that’s their signature.
