Getting there
This was our first meal in Ipoh and our first meal of the day! We took a Grab there as it was a little out of the way. The stall was set up in someone’s house and the tables seemed to spread across two properties.
Ordering
We ordered two bowls of noodles from the front. I got a bowl of roasted pork curry noodles while Mr Bao got the same but added cockles. There were also some yong tau foo toppings by the side. We got some squid which they later added into our noodles directly. The other yong tau foo items were cooked and served in a separate small bowl.
After we ordered, the lady at the front gave us a number and gestured towards an empty table. We were in for a long wait so I went inside to order an iced white coffee, though not before I embarrassed myself asking for a Hor Ka Sai. I was quickly chided by the drinks uncle who rattled off in Cantonese saying he had no idea what I was talking about. Note to self: They call it Neslo (white coffee + milo) in Ipoh.
Food Review

Just looking at the photo of this brings back memories of my burning stomach after eating this. Fair warning, this is NOT for the faint of heart. This bowl of curry noodles packs a punch and will burn your mouth and your stomach. I’m not a spice queen but even Mr Bao said it was too spicy for him.
While I could taste a hint of how flavourful this bowl of noodles were, the spice was so overwhelming it was hard to enjoy. The highlight of this meal was probably the yong tau foo which provided some welcome respite for my scorched tongue. The silky noodles were also a preview for the best that Ipoh had to offer.
The Vibes
Right after we had ordered, a line started forming and the eatery filled up. We got there just in time before the breakfast crowd! We ended up sharing our table with a chatty Kelantan couple. Before they realised we were tourists, we overheard them remarking at how crowded it was for a random weekday morning. One of them said that it must be because some influencers had found this place and made it famous. 😂 He found out later that he was sitting right across from said tourists who found out about the food through a YouTube video!
No shade to the couple though! They were very friendly and offered tons of recommendations for what we could do in Ipoh and shared more about their hometown in Kelantan. They also helped us when we weren’t able to speak in Cantonese with the storeowners. Thankfully for myself, Mr Bao did most of the talking because my Chinese skills leave much to be desired. 😅

A lot of the food spots we visited in Ipoh were sourced from a comprehensive video made by Puri and Sue, a Malaysian couple who make travel and food vlogs on YouTube. We owe our entire Ipoh food itinerary to their recommendations and will definitely look up their channel again the next time we plan to visit Malaysia. Check out their video on the on the best foods to eat in Ipoh and check out their channel for more reviews. 😊

Travel Series: Ipoh, Malaysia – Nov 2023
In our second trip together this year, Mr Bao and I explored another Malaysian city, Ipoh! As we approached the end of the year, we wanted to unwind. We checked out a couple of tourist spots but we were mostly interested in trying out the unique local foods that Ipoh had to offer.
