Introduction

After visiting the Maker’s Fair at Suntec City and having our Starbucks snack, our tummies were ready for dinner. We decided to go up to the top levels of Bugis+ where many of the restaurants were. We did a loop around to see the different stores and this shop caught our eye.

I don’t usually crave Chinese food outside, since I already eat it fairly often during the week. But there was just something about this that drew me in. After looking at our other options (Ramen, Japanese, Thai, and Korean), we decided on this one since it seemed to be popular. It was only 6pm and there were already a lot of people eating.

Food Review

No. 6 Sesame Chicken, Spicy – Small ($6.30)

This was the first item on their menu so we had to get it. Their signature sesame/black bean sauce went really well with the rice. Mr Bao said it’s really easy to just keep eating spoonful after spoonful of rice because of the sauce. This dish has both a spicy and non-spicy version. We opted for the spicy version but we took out the dried chilli and chilli padi so we didn’t burn ourselves. 🌶️ Without the chillis, the spice was manageable.

No. 25 Sambal Ladies Finger with Minced Meat ($6.00)

We chose this over their recommended sambal kangkong and it turned out to be our favourite dish of the evening! I love ladies finger and these were cooked perfectly. Instead of the sesame sauce that was used for the chicken, this dish was made with a sambal sauce. The portion was really generous and I couldn’t stop eating this! This also went really well with the white rice.

No. 31 Homemade Ngoh Hiang – 2 rolls ($6.00)

As the appointed ngoh hiang connoisseur (I just happen to eat this more often than Mr Bao), I thought this was okay. The outside skin is a lighter shade than the ngoh hiang I’m used to. The plus point of this one is that it’s less oily. It also came with a hybrid peanut and something else sauce for dipping. Though, Mr Bao was just dipping his ngoh hiang into the sambal sauce. 🤣 Overall, it was okay but I just personally prefer a stronger five spices herb taste. To each their own!

Final thoughts

I have so many thoughts about this place! First of all, the food was good. The more we ate, the more we wanted to eat! It was very appetising. I also love the simple menu. It makes it easy for me to choose and the store can focus on what they’re good at. I have to agree with their website that the food tastes very homely. 🏠 I think it appeals to people of all ages who like Singaporean-Chinese cuisine. This is a great place for multi-generational families, or students looking for a cheap but satisfying meal. Their fun claypots also helped to keep the food hot even for a slow eater like me.

For all that delicious goodness, our final bill came up to around $22 after adding $0.80 each for 2 bowls of white rice, 2% service charge and 8% GST. It’s value-for-money, especially in town. No wonder there were a large group of 10 teenagers waiting in the queue. So, be prepared to wait a while to be seated during mealtimes. Turnover looks quite fast though, since the preparation time is short.

I would love to come back and try other things. Mr Bao noted that he wanted to come back and try the soup. Unfortunately all their outlets are in the East and their nearest outlet to us is this one in Bugis. By the way, I apologise if I sound like this store is a completely undiscovered gem. With five stores, I’m sure they’re already really popular. The only reason I don’t know about them is because I’m a Westie okay? Give chance please! 😁
