Introduction

This is our second time visiting a restaurant because of the Burpple Beyond membership and it’s been fun so far! Funny story about this restaurant is that last year, I had a meet up scheduled with my friends to eat together. Walking up to the building where the restaurant was located, I saw its brightly lit interior and went up to the counter to check if I was at the right place. I checked for the reservation name and then asked to use their washroom. After that, I perused their menu while waiting for my friends because I was still early. 10 minutes passed and I was getting a bit antsy. Shortly after that, I got a message from the group asking where I was and I said I was already in the restaurant. They said they had just arrived but they couldn’t find me. I walked out the door to wave them in when I was suddenly struck by the realisation that I was in the wrong restaurant. My friends were looking at me from the restaurant next door! I bolted back to the table where I had left my bag while apologising profusely to the guy at the front desk. I scrambled out of there and tried to avoid the stares from the other diners. Thank goodness I didn’t drink from any of the glasses of water that they had set out on the table! So by a stroke of Burpple luck, I’m back almost a year later to pay for my mistake by dining at their restaurant.

Disclaimer: We used the Burpple Beyond 1-for-1 deal which entitled us to 1-for-1 on the mains. This means we only paid a total of $17.90 for both the Butter Chicken and the Palak Paneer. Our bill came out at $36.19 which included a 10% service charge.

Butter Chicken ($17.90)

I liked this! I had only tried butter chicken for the first time two years ago at Al-Azhar and the taste is different but they’re both good in their own ways. This one had larger pieces of chicken and it’s not as red as the one at Al-Azhar. Here, I could still taste the chicken, but this one was also really smokey. While eating, I felt like I’d just walked into a BBQ pit! It also had notes of sweet, savoury, and sour from the tomato base. Honestly it’s nothing I can describe because I’m not familiar with the flavours.

Palak Paneer ($17.90)

This was spinach and cottage cheese which was just as good as the butter chicken. The taste was strangely reminiscent of Japanese curry? But I’m not sure what herb or spice they used that makes it similar. The cottage cheese continues to confuse me because it really just tastes like tofu. It even has the same texture! The cottage cheese is not very flavourful on its own so you need the sauce to go with it. This went really well with the Garlic Naan!

Garlic Naan ($4.00)

We found this to be the better naan of the two. The dough was thin and crispy and it had its own taste. The garlic and cilantro also gave it a refreshing smell which was super appetising. While the smell of garlic was strong, it didn’t taste very strongly of garlic. Overall, it was a light and refreshing choice of carb.

Cheese Naan ($6.00)

In contrast, the cheese naan was very heavy. I don’t think we would order this again because the cheese was quite salty and tastes just like Kraft cheese. It’s not bad on its own for the first few bites but it overpowers the taste of everything else. Note to future self: Don’t add cheese as a topping on a carb if you want to use the carb to complement another dish. 😅

Mango Lassi ($5.00)

It was my first time trying Mango Lassi! It was interesting! It tastes more like a dessert than a drink and I felt like it was a bit too much for even two people to share. It’s sour from the yogurt and sweet from the mango. It had a bit of a cheese taste as well? Mr Bao said it tasted a bit different from the previous time he tried mango lassi, so I don’t know if I can judge how good the mango lassi is because I’ve never really had it before.

Final thoughts

If we come back in future, we would order the garlic naan again, but skip the cheese one. If you’re not a fan of garlic naan, butter naan seems like a popular alternative you could try. We don’t think you could go wrong with any of the meat or vegetable dishes, just based off the two that we tried. We’d love to come back and try other dishes that we might not be as familiar with! We’d have to do more research into North Indian cuisine though, because we relied mostly on previous knowledge from food videos and the menu’s chef’s hat icons! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳
