As you can probably guess, the first time I tried Penang-style hokkien mee (which I’ve been calling prawn mee this whole time) was at Malaysia Chiak back at home. It was actually after I had already started university, so I’m quite new to it but I’ve loved it ever since. Following a sleepy start to our morning and a detour to pick up pastries from Him Heang, we headed out for our next Penang food hunt spot at around 1pm. This place was a little further from our hotel so we took a Grab over and got there in a jiffy.
The store was almost completely empty since it was probably after the lunch rush. We saw an old guy standing at the front of the store in front of the cooking area. There was no one else around so when he turned to look at us, Mr Bao told him our order. The old man laughed and, as it turns out, he didn’t work there! 😂 He was just taking a smoke break at the front of the shop. Almost immediately after, the actual owner came up to us to take our order.
We had one small bowl of prawn noodles each and an iced milo to share.
Be careful when taking your first sip of the soup! It’s the kind that could send you into a spicy coughing fit. Good thing we had iced milo on hand to cool off.
Even though it was fiery, it was also so comforting at the same time. I loved the two textures of the noodles, it’s the same noodle combination as the curry mee that we had at Air Itam. But this broth is different! It’s not milky like curry, it’s “clear”, if you can even call it that. Just look at the deep colour of the soup! The broth was so rich with a strong prawn flavour. I think it might have been stewing with the prawn shells. It was really savoury, and maybe also sweet? Overall very indulgent.
Overall Verdict
It’s a must-try in Penang. It is tied for my favourite Penang dish! Even better that the weather was cooling. So good! The opening hours are fairly accurate. We ended up being the last customers of the day. The store owners were already washing up at 2pm so be careful not to come too late if you want to have lunch here.
